Meet Our Alumnus – From EMBA to Leadership: The Story of Hakan Ekinci

In this series, EMBA alumni share their motivations, experiences, and the impact the program has had on their careers and professional lives.

Could you give a short introduction of yourself (your profession and company)?
Hakan Ekinci. I am an international finance, operations, and risk executive with extensive leadership experience across Turkey, Ireland, and Switzerland. I have held roles such as COO, CFO, CRO, Head of Finance, Head of Risk, and Head of Global (Centralised) Operations, leading strategic transformation and sustainable growth within major financial institutions.

I am a qualified FCCA, CPA (Turkey), CIA, and CRMA, and a member of the Swiss Institute of Internal Auditors. I hold a BA in Management (Hons) from Boğaziçi University and an Executive MBA in International Management (Best in Class) from the University of Geneva. My expertise spans private banking, digitalisation, fintech, regulatory reporting (FIRE), core banking systems (T24, Avaloq), trade finance, blockchain, and AI in Swiss banking.

As a Certified Coach and hands-on leader, I am committed to developing high-performing teams and aligning people, processes, and technology to achieve strategic objectives. Known for adaptability, execution, and a results-driven approach, I bring a holistic understanding of finance, risk, and operations to deliver long-term organisational value.

What was your main motivation when you enrolled in the Geneva EMBA?
My main motivation was to position myself for C-suite roles within mid-sized international banks in Switzerland. Winning the Best in Class and Best Thesis awards in 2012 significantly enhanced my professional visibility.

At the end of your program, do you feel that this motivation was fulfilled?
Absolutely. I received my next leadership assignment immediately after completing the program.

What personal transformation did this program bring about in you?
It reinforced my belief that with focus and discipline, I can achieve any goal I set. It also helped me better understand my strengths and areas to develop, allowing me to build more intentionally on my strengths.

And what transformation did it lead to in your professional journey (changes in role, position, career path, etc.)?
It encouraged me to leverage my network more strategically. Combined with increased visibility—especially on LinkedIn—new opportunities emerged quickly.

How would you personally define self-leadership?
Self-leadership means taking full ownership of your career path and proactively steering it toward your goals.

In your opinion, what do Swiss companies need most today?
Swiss companies must continue prioritizing high-quality, high-value products and services to remain competitive and offset the challenges of a strong Swiss franc.

What advice would you give to a newly enrolled student in the program?
Stay curious, stay engaged, and build purpose-driven networks both within the university and across the broader professional community.
