Through its company visit series, the EMBA at the University of Geneva offers students and alumni the opportunity to connect with leading organizations, explore real-world leadership challenges, and gain first-hand insights into innovation, strategy, and operations across industries.
On 19 February, EMBA students and alumni from the University of Geneva had the opportunity to visit Medtronic at its site in Tolochenaz, Switzerland — an inspiring experience that combined innovation, strategy, and meaningful connections within the EMBA community.
The visit began with a warm welcome and company presentation by Joshua Chappel, Welcome Desk Coordinator at Medtronic, who introduced participants to the company’s history and mission. Founded less than a century ago as a small medical equipment repair shop, Medtronic has since grown into one of the world’s leading medical technology companies, dedicated to helping people live healthier, pain-free lives.

Participants then attended an insightful presentation by Guillaume Luong Trong Van, Strategy & Network Operations Director, who shared perspectives on how Medtronic manages its global network of products and manufacturing sites. His presentation offered valuable insights into the strategic and operational challenges involved in coordinating innovation, production, and global distribution in the medical technology sector.
The visit also included a tour of Medtronic’s museum, office facilities, and manufacturing operations, providing participants with a behind-the-scenes look at the technologies and medical implants that help save and improve lives every day.
Beyond technological innovation, visitors were particularly impressed by Medtronic’s strong commitment to sustainability and its local community. In collaboration with the municipality of Tolochenaz, the company has implemented an energy-efficient cooling solution using water from the nearby lake — a powerful example of a locally driven initiative combining environmental responsibility and operational efficiency.
Bringing together current students and alumni, the visit also served as a valuable opportunity to strengthen connections within the EMBA UNIGE community.
