Drive your career forward with self-leadership

How can you credibly lead others if you don’t know where you’re going yourself? People quickly sense whether a leader’s vision is authentic and aligned with a real purpose. What’s more, without conviction and clarity, leadership falters, leaving teams unanchored in complex environments. A key module in the EMBA at the University of Geneva can change all this.

Why self-leadership matters
During the Geneva EMBA, participants gain cognitive skills through core modules like finance and strategy and refine their leadership abilities in soft-skills courses. However, without self-leadership, there’s a critical missing piece: the ability to integrate these learnings into a cohesive personal and professional transformation.
Jean-Yves Mercier, Director of the EMBA programme explains: “Participants gain so many competencies on our course, but if we don’t guide them, much of what they learn becomes random,” explains. “Self-leadership is about asking, ‘What do I want to achieve, and how can I align my skills and aspirations to take control of my career?’ The Self-Leadership module equips participants to transform their learning into deliberate action and empowers individuals to engage meaningfully with their environments and make purposeful decisions.

A practical approach to navigating paradoxes
Insights gained from the highly popular Self-Leadership module help participants identify their motivations, strengths, and aspirations while developing strategies to reconcile contradictions in their professional and personal environments. It’s not about being self-centred—it’s about understanding one’s role within a larger system.
Students can test their new-found insights in the second year, too, when the focus shifts to acting responsibly, incorporating elements of good governance across environmental, social, financial, and economic dimensions. While analytical tools and understanding challenges provide a solid foundation, they don’t offer the courage or clarity to make the right decisions. Self-leadership bridges this gap by equipping participants to navigate complex, paradoxical situations with confidence

What students gain from the Self-Leadership module:
– Clarity and focus: Reflect on your strengths, values, and aspirations to align your career with your purpose.
Personal strategies: Develop tools to navigate external pressures and systemic constraints effectively.
Integrated transformation: Consolidate your cognitive, social, and leadership skills into actionable, strategic steps.

This course doesn’t just teach you how to lead—it shows you how to lead yourself.
